On April 17, 1967, at Madison Square Garden in New York, he defeated Emile Griffith by unanimous decision and snatched the middle titles of the World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Association and the fight was considered the best of the year by the magazine"Ring Magazine". He recovered his WBA and CMB titles on March 4, 1968, in New York, beating Emile Griffith by unanimous decision.

Lost His Title
In his first defense on September 29, 1967, in New York, Emile Griffith defeated him by majority decision. In his second stage as monarch, he lost the WBA and CMB titles on November 7, 1970 in Rome, Carlos Monzón knocked him out in 12 rounds.

On May 8, 1971, in Monaco, Carlos Monzón knocked him out in three rounds, when he fought for the WBA and WBC middle titles.
