He recovered his WBA and CMB titles on March 4, 1968, in New York, beating Emile Griffith by unanimous decision.

Lost His Title
In his first defense on September 29, 1967, in New York, Emile Griffith defeated him by majority decision. In his second stage as monarch, he lost the WBA and CMB titles on November 7, 1970 in Rome, Carlos Monzón knocked him out in 12 rounds.

Withdrawal
On May 8, 1971, in Monaco, Carlos Monzón knocked him out in three rounds, when he fought for the WBA and WBC middle titles.
