On July 18, 1981, in Las Vegas, he defeated Eddie Mustafa Muhammad by unanimous decision and snatched the WBA light heavyweight title from him. In his sixth defense, on March 18, 1983, he unified with WBC champion Dwight Muhammad Qawi and became a double light heavyweight champion. On February 25, 1984, in Atlantic City, he unified his WBA and WBC crowns with Eddie Davis, IBF leader, whom he defeated by unanimous decision and became triple light heavyweight world champion. In addition, on September 21, 1985 in Las Vegas, he defeated Larry Holmes by unanimous decision and became IBF heavyweight champion.

Lost His Title
After ten defenses of the WBA light heavyweight title, five of the scepter recognized by the WBC and two of the IBF, he resigned to go in search of the IBF full sash. His IBF heavyweight title was lost on June 27, 1988, in Atlantic City, when he unified it with Mike Tyson (WBC and WBA heavyweight champion), who knocked him out in one round.
