On March 8, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, he won the National Boxing Association lightweight world title from Sammy Angott, defeating him by unanimous decision in 15 rounds.
Juan Zurita was part of the now legendary Juan Zurita-Joe Conde-Rodolfo Casanova trilogy. Zurita beat Conde nine times, in exchange for a defeat, but he lost four times to Casanova, for just one defeat, and Casanova lost Conde twice, because the latter spoke to him in English and made him nervous.
