On March 27, 1961 in Washington, he knocked out Duke Williams in two turns.

Won The World Title
On May 24, 1968, in New York, he won the Nigerian Richard"Dick Tiger"Ihetu by effective knockout and won the light heavyweight world title endorsed by the WBC and WBA. In his ninth defense of the WBC semi-complete title, he regained the WBA belt, on April 7, 1972 in Miami, defeating Vicente Rondón by knockout in three.

Lost His Title
The WBA ignored him when he faced Joe Frazier for the full title and lost. The WBC left him as champion. He left the titles after on June 17, 1974, in New Mexico, he beat Jorge Víctor Ahumada by points and announced his retirement in September of that same year. Eight months later he returned in full weight and could no longer be world champion.

Withdrawal
His final goodbye was on June 2, 1978, in Wichita, Kansas, when Bob Hazelton technically knocked him out in two rounds.
