Won The World Title
On March 16, 2002, in Las Vegas, he technically knocked out Antonio Diaz in 10 rounds in Las Vegas and won the vacant WBO welterweight title. On April 12, 2008. Ne Atlantis City, defeated Cermet Cintrón by effective knockout and won the IBF welterweight title. On July 26, 2008, in Las Vegas, he knocked out Miguel Cotto and won the WBA welterweight title.

Lost His Title
In his eighth defense, on July 14, 2007, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, Paul Williams defeated him by unanimous decision. He relinquished the IBF welterweight title to go for the WBA welterweight title, which he won but lost in his first defense to Shane Mosley at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 24, 2009.
