On April 30, 2011 in Texcoco, Mexico, he won an 11-round medical technical decision over Gilberto Keb Baas and became the WBC light flyweight champion. He regained the WBC light flyweight belt on October 6, 2012, in Toluca, by defeating Thai Kompayak Porpramook by technical knockout in six rounds in Toluca, who had dethroned him in his first stage as champion.

In his first stage he lost the WBC light flyweight title in his second defense, in Thailand, when he fell by an effective knockout in ten rounds with the local Kompayak Porpramook. In his second stage as WBC light flyweight champion, he lost the belt in his fifth defense, in Tokyo, against Japan's Naoya Inoue, who defeated him by technical knockout in six rounds.
