On May 21, 1977, in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, he knocked out the Korean Dong-Kyun Yum in 12 rounds and became WBC super bantamweight champion. On March 31, 1984, in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, he defeated his compatriot Juan La Porte by unanimous decision and obtained the WBC featherweight title. His third world crown in a different division was won on May 19, 1985, in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, by beating Rocky Lockridge by majority decision to keep the WBA super featherweight belt.
Lost His Title
He did not lose it, he made 17 successful defenses and resigned to go in search of the featherweight crown. On December 8, 1984, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in what was the first defense of the WBC featherweight belt, the Ghanaian Azumah Nelson knocked him out in 11 rounds. The super featherweight crown was lost in his first defense, on May 24, 1986 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, when he fell by technical knockout in nine rounds with Alfredo Layne.
On July 19, 1989, in Florida, he knocked out Mario Salazar in two rounds.
