On August 2, 1980, in Detroit, Michigan, he defeated Mexican Pipino Cuevas by technical knockout in ten rounds and stripped him of the WBA welterweight title. On December 3, 1982, in New Orleans, he defeated Wilfredo Benítez by majority decision and obtained the WBC super welterweight title. He regained the WBC middleweight title on June 23, 1986, in Las Vegas, by technically knocking out Mark Medals in eight rounds. On October 29, 1987, in Las Vegas, he knocked out Juan Domingo Roldan in four rounds and seized the vacant WBC middleweight title. He became WBO super middleweight champion on November 4, 1988, in Las Vegas, defeating James Kinchen by majority decision. He obtained the WBA light heavyweight title on June 3, 1991, in Las Vegas, defeating Virgil Hill by unanimous decision.

Lost His Title
In the fourth defense, when he unified his WBA title with Ray Leonard, WBC champion, who defeated him by technical knockout in 14 rounds on September 16, 1981, in Las Vegas.
