On November 30, 1979, in Las Vegas, he defeated Wilfredo Benítez by unanimous decision and obtained the WBC welterweight title. He recovered the WBC welterweight belt in a rematch against Roberto Durán, whom he defeated by technical knockout in eight rounds, on November 25, 1980 in New Orleans. He seized the WBA super welterweight title on June 25, 1981, in Houston, Texas, defeating Ayub Kalule by technical knockout in nine rounds. In his third defense of the WBC welterweight title, he unified it with Tommy Hearns, WBA welterweight champion, on September 16, 1981 in Las Vegas and won by technical knockout in 14 rounds; in a fight that was considered the fight of the year by the specialized magazine Ring Magazine. On April 6, 1987, in Las Vegas, he defeated Marvin Hagler by majority decision and took the WBC middleweight title from him. In addition, on November 7, 1988, in Las Vegas, he defeated Donny Lalonde by technical knockout in nine rounds and kept the WBC super middleweight title.MB

Lost His Title
In his second defense, on June 20, 1980, in Montreal, Canada, Panamanian Roberto Durán defeated him by unanimous decision and took the WBC welterweight title from him. He didn't lose his WBC and WBA welterweight titles, he gave them up to go in search of the WBC middleweight crown. He did not lose the super middleweight title, he resigned to go in search of super welterweight against Terry Norris, on February 9, 1991, in New York, and lost by unanimous decision in 12 rounds

Withdrawal
On March 1, 1997, in Atlantic City, he was technically knocked out in five rounds by Hector "Macho" Camacho.
