On February 1, 2003, in Las Vegas, he defeated Manuel"Mantecas"Medina by technical knockout in seven rounds to win the vacant IBF featherweight title. On November 1, 2003, he unified his title against Derrick Gainer, whom he defeated in seven rounds and won the WBA super featherweight championship. On August 5, 2006, he technically knocked out Terdsak Kokietgym in seven rounds and won the WBO featherweight belt. On March 17, 2007, in Las Vegas, he wrested the WBC super featherweight belt from Marco Antonio Barrera by defeating him by unanimous decision. On February 28, 2008, he won the vacant WBO and WBA lightweight championships, defeating by a nine-round technical knockout. His fourth world crown, the WBO super lightweight, was obtained on April 14, 2012, by defeating Serhiy Fedchenko by unanimous decision.

On March 4, 2006, Chris John defeated him by unanimous decision and took the WBA featherweight title from him, because he had already relinquished the IBF featherweight. On March 15, 2008, Manny Pacquiao defeated him by split decision for the WBC super featherweight title.
