Won The World Title
On March 25, 2004, at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, he technically knocked out José Luis Valbuena in 12 rounds and won the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight belt. On December 3, 2005, at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, he snatched the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight belt from Óscar Larios, defeating him by technical knockout in three rounds. On August 6, 2007, at the Dodge Arena, Hidalgo, Texas, he regained the WBC Super Bantamweight title by knocking out Rafael Márquez in six rounds.
Lost His Title
After two successful defenses, he resigned from the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight, winning the WBC super bantamweight. The WBC super bantamweight lost it in his third defense against Rafael Márquez on March 3, 2007, when he fell by medical technical decision in seven rounds, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. In his second stage as super bantamweight champion, he left it vacant after two defenses, due to retinal detachment in his right eye.
On May 22, 2010, Rafael Márquez knocked him out in three rounds, when they disputed the WBC super bantamweight silver title.
Israel Vázquez underwent surgery to remove his badly damaged right eye and fit a prosthesis. The boxer suffered serious damage to his eyeballs as a result of the four terrible battles he starred in against Rafael Márquez. After the third fight he was diagnosed with retinal detachment and even so he signed a fourth against Márquez; six years paid the consequences. During the fight I had blurred vision practically from the second round; I received many blows, I did not distinguish well the person in front of me, I looked at silhouettes, colors, but not details; after that I went to the eye doctor who detected retinal detachment. They put a gas bubble, a belt around my eye, silicone, oil, various things, however, like all my fellow boxers, courage, heart, and the desire to continue in boxing was what motivated me to do the fourth fight, he added. After the fourth fight against Márquez on May 22, 2010 where Vázquez lost by knockout in the third round.o.
