On June 25, 1989, in South Korea, he won a unanimous decision against Yul-Woo Lee and obtained the WBC light flyweight belt. On his second occasion he dethroned Melchor Cob, in Las Vegas, whom he won by unanimous decision on June 3, 1991, in Las Vegas and won the IBF and WBC light flyweight belt on February 19, 1994 in Los Angeles, by defeating by unanimous decision to Michael Carvajal.

Lost His Title
The first time in the sixth defense against the Filipino Rolando Pascua, in Inglewood, California, when he lost by technical knockout in six rounds. In his second time as champion he lost it in the fifth defense against Michael Carvajal, in Las Vegas, falling by technical knockout in seven rounds. The third time he lost his crown was in the fourth defense on July 15, 1995, in Inglewood, California, when Saman Sorjaturong knocked him out in seven rounds.
