On March 31, 1982, in New York, he knocked out Rafael López in three rounds.

Won The World Title
On August 7, 1983, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the vacant WBC super featherweight title was disputed with the Mexican Rafael Limón and he won by technical knockout in five rounds. On August 10, 1985, in Las Vegas, he defeated Mexican José Luis Ramírez by unanimous decision and snatched the WBC lightweight title from him. In addition, on March 6, 1989, in Reno, Nevada, he defeated Ray Mancini by majority decision and became WBO super lightweight champion. He regained the WBO super lightweight belt by beating American Greg Haugen in a rematch fight on May 18, 1991 in Reno, Nevada.

Lost His Title
He did not lose it, he resigned after his first defense to go in search of the lightweight title. Nor did he lose the WBC lightweight title, he resigned after two defenses to go in search of the super lightweight belt. He lost the WBO super lightweight belt in his third defense on February 23, 1991, in Las Vegas, to a majority decision win from Greg Haugen. On September 12, 1992, in Las Vegas, he disputed the Mexican Julio César Chávez for the WBC super lightweight title and lost by unanimous decision and at the same time he ceased to be WBO champion, a title that was not at stake.

Withdrawal
On May 14, 2010, Saúl Durán defeated him by unanimous decision in ten rounds.
