On December 12, 1998, in Atlantic City, he knocked out Mexican Luis Ramón Campas in seven rounds and won the IBF super welterweight title. On September 22, 2001, he won the WBA super welterweight title by defeating José Alfredo Flores by knockout in seven in Las Vegas.

Lost His Title
In the unification fight with WBA champion Felix Trinidad on December 2, 2000, in Las Vegas, he lost by TKO in 12 in what was his sixth defense. He lost the second title in his third defense against Óscar de la Hoya by technical knockout in 11, on September 14, 2002, in Las Vegas.
