On July 12, 1986, in Atlanta, he won the WBA cruiserweight title by defeating Dwight Muhammad Qawi by unanimous decision. In his third defense, he unified his crown with Ricky Parkey (IBF cruiserweight champion), on May 15, 1987 in Las Vegas, and won by knockout in three rounds. In 1988 he became the first cruiserweight champion recognized at the same time by the World Boxing Council, the World Boxing Association and the International Boxing Federation, after defeating Carlos De León. On October 25, 1990, in Las Vegas, he knocked out James Douglas in three rounds and won the full title endorsed by the WBC, WBA and IBF. . On November 6, 1993, in Las Vegas, he regained the WBA and IBF belts, defeating Riddick Bowe by majority decision. He became WBA champion again on November 9, 1996, after defeating Mike Tyson by technical knockout in 11 rounds. On November 13, 1999, in Las Vegas, Lennox Lewis (WBC monarch) defeated him by unanimous decision and took the full IBF and WBA title from him. He lost the WBA full belt in his first defense, in the rematch with John Ruiz, on March 3, 2001 in Las Vegas, falling by unanimous decision.
